“As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” —Matthew 9:9-13

Consider for a moment that Saint Matthew wrote of his own call from Jesus, here in his Gospel of the Lord. The Apostles of Jesus were ordinary people, just like you and me; sinners, like you and me. Yet, Jesus called them each to rise and follow Him. Each one chose to get up, draw closer to Christ, and walk with Him. Because they chose to arise to meet Jesus, each Apostle accomplished great things for God with their lives.

Christ passes by each of us and calls: What is the story of your own calling that you would write? What great things would God have you do once you’ve arisen to answer Jesus’ call?
