“Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.” He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone. He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” —Luke 9:18-22

“Who do you say that I am?” Depending on how you count them, there are 307 recorded questions that Jesus asked during His ministry. Interestingly, Jesus was asked 183 questions but answered only three.

On a first date, a couple asks each other many questions. They use questions to learn about each other, but more importantly, to start conversations. Yet, not all questions are of the same quality. A bad question can ruin the encounter. Perhaps that is why Jesus answered so few.

A good meditation exercise is to read the whole Gospel chapter where Jesus asks a question, and then meditate on how you will answer it. Sometimes, in prayer, it’s better to withhold our questions and let the Lord do the asking. Jesus asks the question because He wants to have a conversation with you.
