“The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.
They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble; they shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall be their King forever. Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect.” —Wisdom 3:1-9
Matthew, Mark, and Luke all write that Jesus once asked, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.’ Jesus was not separating Himself from the Trinity; He was trying to explain an inconceivable concept.
In God’s presence, I realized just how pure He is. Beyond any word or description ever created by man, God was greater than the human mind can perceive. I realize the blessed gift of my purgative time of suffering. I once believed I was good enough to be in God’s presence, until I was actually there. If the lowliest saint’s soul is like crystal compared to the coal-black darkness of mine, so was that saint’s soul black as compared to the crystal clarity of God.
Before, I had no reference for how good God is, but once cleansed, I understood God did not place me in the torment; I asked for it so He would not see the tarnish I had heaped upon my soul. “…yet is their hope full of immortality; chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.”
Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great for the Holy Souls in Purgatory:
“Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.”
Blessed John Bodey, pray for us.
Jesus, I trust in you.
