“Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me. The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” —Luke 10:38-42
Am I more like Martha or like Mary? It is easy to become burdened by the day, as Martha was, going to and fro, busying ourselves with daily tasks. We go about our work, even in serving others, with only our thoughts crowding our minds. Our prayers can fall victim to the same anxiety, feeling as if we are climbing a tall mountain.
We busy ourselves, but let our minds be with the Lord. We serve others with love, knowing that by serving them, we serve Christ, but when He calls, we pause to hear His voice. We listen for Jesus to speak to us as we pray, and when He does, we stop our formal prayers to sit at His feet. No matter where we are in our day, when Jesus enters and speaks to us, we must be willing to choose the better part.
Saint Bruno, pray for us.
Jesus, I trust in you.
