“The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” —Matthew 16:28-30

Imagine the confusion and uncertainty the Apostles felt as Jesus ascended into heaven. Christ lays down what must have seemed an insurmountable task: “…make disciples of all nations…”, then He is gone. Imagine the looks they gave each other after hearing such a command and Jesus’ promise to remain with them always, then He promptly rose into the heavens.

They did not yet know what God had in store for them. They did not yet know how the Holy Spirit would come or how the Advocate would pave the road ahead of them with the stones of the divine will. They waited, prayed, and when God deemed the time right, He sent His Spirit, and they became men of action. So it is the same with each of us. While we may not yet know what God has planned, whatever it is, it is perfect, and He will send the Advocate to smooth the way for us, too.

Saint Matthias the Apostle, pray for us.

Jesus, I trust in you.
