“While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.” But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.” —Matthew 12:46-50
Some use this passage to insinuate that Jesus did not revere His mother, Mary. What Christ does here is not a disrespect to His mother; He directs us to live by her example.
Just as in another passage, a woman cried out, ‘Blessed is the womb that bore you!’ Jesus replies, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!” Jesus tells us that Mary was not blessed because He was her Son. Mary was blessed because she listened to the Lord and did His will. Throughout Scripture, Jesus and Mary draw us the blueprint of what living in the will of the Father looks like.
Saint Lawrence of Brindisi, pray for us.
Jesus, I trust in you.
