Daily Inspiration

Jesus said to his disciples: “Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this:  if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so. Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is long delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards, the servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”—Matthew 24:42-51

There was once a man who feared the loss of his wife and children more than anything else in the world, and it weighed heavily upon him. One day, the Lord showed the man the trials Saint Joseph suffered in his life. God then showed the man the day and hour each of his loved ones would be taken. The man was shaken to tears, but turned to prayer. He asked the Lord what he could offer of himself, so that his wife and children, when taken from him, would live for eternity with Christ. If the man knew his family would be with Jesus, he would happily give them all to Him that day. He petitioned the Lord, ‘If they are to live with you forever, then please take them from me today. Take the whole world and leave me here alone, if the whole world may go to be with you.’

The Lord then answered, not in words but with compassion. The crushing fear of loss that the man once felt was taken from him. The marked days came and went, yet his family remained with him. The man realized that his family and all the other blessings in his life already belonged to the Lord; they were a part of the Master’s household. The servant learned that he was placed here to care for that household, and the best way for anyone to truly live this life is to surrender it to God.
