“Jesus said to the crowds: "To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” -Matthew 11:16-19
As we walk to Bethlehem with the Holy Family in their world this Advent, let us ponder our place in this world.
The children in the marketplace represent the Old Testament prophets who lived and breathed the Word of God. They were the example God sent into the world to show His lost people the Way. But few listened to them.
On this day, may we be like the children in the market. May God allow each of us the grace to play the flute and sing the dirge for those who pass by. May our numbers overwhelm those who walk by so they finally awaken to the music of the Lord. Let our lives be vindication to those around us so they may see God’s wisdom through our works.
Saint Lucy, pray for us.
