“When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.’ And he said to them, ‘Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.” (Luke 2:48-51)
“On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servers, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’”
(John 2:1-5)
This excerpt from my new book,The Triumph of the Cross seemed appropriate for today’s memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“Mary, who always cares for and intervenes with her Son on behalf of all her children, tried to slow me down, but I didn’t listen. I laughed as I thought about how her words reminded me of her words at the wedding at Cana. I’ve always loved the mother-Son exchange in that story. Mary knew the Lord best. From before His conception and through His life, ministry, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension, Mary had been there with Him.
At the wedding, Jesus asked Mary why He should be concerned that the groom and bride had run out of wine. Mary had already known since that day long ago when she and Joseph had found Jesus in the temple that Jesus would do whatever she asked of Him. I can almost see her gentle smile and loving wink toward her Son, never breaking her gaze upon Jesus as she tells the servers to listen to Him.”
