“The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever." These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.” -John 6:52-59
The word Jesus uses in this passage for “Eat” in Greek means to gnaw on meat. There is no metaphor here; Christ tells us that unless we eat His flesh and drink His Blood, we have no life in us. Many struggle with this Truth and have chosen to walk away.
If we remain with Him in the Mass, during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we hear Jesus’ words repeated. The food and drink of bread and wine are transformed into the True food and drink of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We may struggle to understand the how, but the how is of no consequence. Just as our cells divide to reproduce, we do not need to know how. We have faith in God’s design, that they will divide, and by that action, we live. Likewise, with faith in God’s design, we know that the bread and wine are transformed and, through that miracle, when we eat of Him, we live.
