Jesus said to the Apostles: “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’” -Luke 17:7-10
A friend recently reminded me of an old saying fitting this Scripture passage. Maybe you’ve seen the bumper stickers that read, “God is my copilot.”
That motto is an entirely backward and disordered way of thinking and living. A copilot is placed to serve and help the captain, who ultimately has the authority and responsibility to move the craft from point A to point B safely and efficiently. In this saying, we place ourselves as the master and God as our servant.
An ordered soul knows his place and purpose, making God the captain and himself the copilot. Our place is to serve and help the Captain pilot our soul safely to heaven.
Saint Josaphat, pray for us.
