“Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your Kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.” -Luke 11:1-4
One could spend his whole life contemplating the opening words of the Lord’s Prayer. God is my Father and yours. Our neighbors, coworkers, and even the guy who cut us off in traffic are all His children. Those who live half a world away still belong to Him.
God is the good Father who knows each child's needs. His will is for us to remain with Him for all eternity, and He loves us beyond human reasoning. Because of this perfect love, He gives us our own will to either choose Him or turn away.
Take time today to pray the Lord’s Prayer slowly. Hold onto each word and speak it from your heart. Consider the meaning and reason for each sentence. Listen to the words taught to us by the Word and hear Him.
"Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen"
Saint John Henry Newman, pray for us.
