“An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.” -Luke 46-50
There is an innocence in children that drains away as we grow older. When I have the chance to speak with groups of kids, their questions always surprise me. I usually don’t struggle to answer adult questions, but those presented by children are most perplexing.
If I condensed all the questions I’ve received from adults into one, it would be, “What do I have to do to get into heaven? But children are deeper, more caring, and more complex; they want to know about Jesus. They ask, “What does He feel when I sin?”
I pray we can all be childlike with Christ. Instead of asking, “What minimum must I do to enter the Father’s house?” I pray we consider, like children, “How do my actions affect my relationship with Christ?”
Saint Jerome, pray for us.
