“As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” -Matthew 9:9-13
If not today or tomorrow, there will come a day when Jesus passes by and says to each of us, “Follow me.” Matthew had a thousand reasons not to follow Him, but only one reason to rise up and go after Our Lord.
Like Matthew, when Christ invites you to follow Him, you will have a choice. Either you will allow Him to turn your life upside down, bringing order where there was disarray, or you will use one of the thousand excuses given to you by the enemy to remain seated in chaos.
When we step away from the traps of this life, we sacrifice nothing because following Christ is a blessed gift and great mercy. He pulls us up, freeing us from the bondage of the enemy.
Saint Matthew, pray for us.
