“The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth, for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. People do not put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.” -Matthew 9:14-17
Christ wishes to pour Himself into each of us, but He waits for us to ready ourselves to receive the libation of His fruit. We must be willing to throw away our old worldly selves; otherwise, His grace will spill out from us.
Just as new wineskins are crafted before the wine is ready, our lives are a continuous work. We strive to use the materials He gives us to make ourselves worthy vessels for the choice wine He offers. Mistakes will inevitably occur, but we must persist and strive to become more deserving vessels.
Our Lord is patient and would rather us take a hundred years to complete our work so that He may pour himself into us and preserve us than lose us for all eternity.
