“Jesus summoned them and said to them, you know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” -Mark 10:42-45
Jesus calls us, the members of His body, to serve. Christ gives us authority, not from a position of earthly power but from above, and this authority is made apparent through our humility and service to others. When we serve the least of His people, we serve Christ.
The enemy wants us to believe this is where we are due our reward, but nothing of this world is worthy of that desire. Our true reward comes when we are bathed in the glory of the Most Holy Trinity. In that light of God, everyone is first. But to get there, as members of Christ’s body, we must selflessly give of ourselves as a ransom for many, just as Jesus did for us.
