“They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they remained silent. For they had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” -Mark 9:33-37
It's a stark contrast to see how my generation has disrupted the age-old order. Once, children were aware of their place as the least among all. They relied on their parents for all their needs, and their devotion led them to study Scripture and God’s law, knowing their place was to serve others. Today, children are placed above all, often even above God, expecting to be served.
If we want to receive the Holy Trinity within us, we must welcome the traditional childlike status. We must humble ourselves to the lowest place if we wish for Christ to draw us into His midst. To become a servant of all is to receive Christ and the One who sent Him.
