“The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” -Matthew 9:14-15
If you’ve never done it before or have just fallen away from the practice, Lent is the perfect time to begin regular fasting. There are all forms of fasting, and most of us can find a style that fits well into our lives. I’m speaking of more than the minimal abstinence required during Lent.
The hunger caused by fasting, whether in our belly or our psyche, reminds us that we fast because we await the return of the Bridegroom. Throughout our fast, we experience a longing ache of hunger and sacrifice in our physical body. Fasting brings to our physical senses the same hunger our soul feels until it is once again united with the Lord.
Consider finding a sacrifice that works for your lifestyle and physical health so that you may learn of the hunger that constantly pulls at your soul.
