“By reason of His immensity, God is present everywhere; but there are two places where He dwells in a particular manner. One is in the highest heavens, where He is present by that glory which He communicates to the blessed; the other is on earth—within the humble soul that loves Him.” –St. Alphonsus Liguori

Some time ago, I learned the following truth, but for the life of me, I can not recall from whom it came.

“God wants to be with us, always. He places an empty throne in every soul, but He leaves it to us as to who or what fills it.”

Today’s Scripture reading of the Beatitudes reminded me of that quote and made me wonder what I have placed in His rightful throne of my heart. Am I poor, hungry, weeping, or hated? Is my soul humble and loving, and do I live as a child of God?

“I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” – John 17:14

Have I replaced His presence with the trappings of this world? With the constant temptations that surround me, it is easy to do. The Scriptures are there to train my focus on the rewards to come rather than on those of this day.

“I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them.” – Revelation 21:3

This St. Valentine’s Day, when the Lord asks me, “Be Mine?”, how will I answer Him? Have I truly left room for Him on the throne of my soul?
