“It is a lesson we all need – to let alone the things that do not concern us. He has other ways for others to follow Him; all do not go by the same path. It is for each of us to learn the path by which He requires us to follow Him, and to follow Him in that path.” Saint Katharine Drexel
When I was in the presence of the Holy Spirit, I understood that God gives us an infinite number of paths to Him. To be clear, the path to God leads to Him through Jesus. These paths that cross in front of us are the paths that the Good Shepard uses to find His lost sheep.
“Jesus said to him, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” (John 14:6)
Jesus tells us that He is the Way and that He also will be with us on our journey. Matthew, in his gospel, says that the road to Hell is paved, flat, and wide, while the path to God is narrow. I was given the knowledge that God gives us an infinite number of chances to choose His path, no matter how far along that paved road we’ve traveled. He places Himself, the Way, all along that highway, but it is up to us to recognize and choose Him. If we miss it, He calls to us from the next path.
I know how easy it is to take that smooth highway, but through my spiritual encounters, I can now see the many times that God has placed His path all along that easy road to perdition. The spiritual and cultural battle rages around us and calls out for us to stay the course. It calls out for us to speed on toward our doom. We must remember, that the father of lies tells us to stay on the easy road, nothing worthwhile awaits us on that narrow path; it is much too difficult.
But, in the spiritual battle, we must remember to keep our focus on Jesus always and to only answer to Him. That narrow road to God can indeed be difficult if we try to navigate it alone. As we choose to follow the Way and break through the thistle and rubble placed at the trailhead by the enemy, we must realize that we are given many companions to accompany us on the road to our salvation.
“I am with you always, even to the consummation of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give another advocate to you. So that he may abide with you for eternity: The Spirit of Truth,” (John 14:16-17)
Jesus is not only the path to the Father, but He is also with us on that path. Jesus asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit to walk with us as well. The Lord also places other travelers with us and commands us to help each other to reach Him.
There are times in our life, where we are asked to call out from the brush and rubble to those traveling that wide highway and invite them to join us on the better path. Other times we may come upon those who are thinking about straying from the Way. We should walk with them for a while and encourage them to continue with Him.
The path to God crosses over that smooth road over and over again. At times it can be tempting to take a wrong turn. Perhaps one day it will be us who need to hear a gentle call, inviting us back onto the narrow path.
Christ is with us, and He is ready to carry His sheep on His shoulders when we are lost. Keep an open ear to listen for His voice, a sharp eye to look for His path, and do not be afraid to call out to others along the Way.
