“When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” -Matthew 22:34-40

After being in the presence of the Lord, if I had only one word to describe God, it would be Love. But God’s love is beyond any earthly comprehension. What struck me the deepest was that although through Him, I could see my family, friends, and all of creation, it seemed my Lord and I were the only ones in all of the universe. In His presence, I could finally love Him as He deserved, with all my being.

Years later, I would drown in an ocean of pain, succumbing to an ocean of Christ’s mercy. The stone walls of my soul were torn away and replaced with walls of Jesus’ mercy. I saw my neighbors as the Lord saw them, and I loved them as Jesus loved them.

We can not hope to love the Lord or our neighbors like that on our own. We must ask God to touch our souls, to elevate our being, so that while still living in the world, we see God and His creation through His eyes, and love God and our neighbors as He loves us, as if we are the only ones ever created.
