“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.” -Matthew 7:24-27
Just a few chapters later in the Gospel of Matthew, we hear Christ speak these words again. “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” -Matthew 16:18-19
In today’s passage, Jesus explains that one who places his trust and faith in Christ will withstand the rain and winds of life. Later, He names Peter as the rock, the foundation of His Church on Earth.
When I was in the presence of the Holy Spirit, He showed me something I rarely speak about. I saw below me a long line of stone slabs, each representing a different sect of Christianity. Some spaces had one or two massive slabs stacked on top of one another. Some had a few more slabs, while other spaces were empty, with no foundation at all. But below me was stone slab upon stone slab, forming a type of structure that reached so very high up, and came to rest just a few inches below me. It was the only sect I could identify: the Catholic Church.
I looked into the Holy Spirit and saw the Truth of the universe, just as I looked into those stone slabs and saw that same Truth. I exclaimed to God, as I looked from Him, to the Church, and back again, ‘It’s all true, You and the Church are but one Truth!”
