“When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.” He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion said in reply, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.” -Matthew 8:5-11

Faith is a gift from God, and although He showers that gift down upon all, not all choose to receive it. For those who receive the gift of faith upon them, their eyes open to the great Truth of the Lord.

The centurion was graced with earthly power and esteem, yet he embraced the gift of faith and was privy to God’s ultimate Truth. Men and women, no matter their fame or fortune, are unworthy to be in God’s presence. Yet God loves man, who chose sin over Him, more than the angels, who chose to remain with their eyes fixed upon Him for all eternity.

Divine love provides the faith we need to know the truth. Truth forces the need to proclaim it for all to hear. Who are we to hold our tongue when God gives us the faith, truth, and words to speak? The centurion could never have imagined how his words of truth would be memorialized in the Mass for centuries to come. Faith leads to truth, truth leads one to speak; only the Lord knows the lasting effect of your faith, so proclaim His Truth whenever you speak.
