“John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” -John 1:29-34
When I met the Holy Spirit, I realized that at some point before my conception or the moment of, I lived with God and knew Him. I realized again in His presence that I was homesick for Him my whole life. Once born, I grew and learned to think and see with my mind and eyes rather than my heart, forgetting that I once intimately knew God.
When John the Baptist was but a child in the womb, he too lived with God and knew Him. When Mary, carrying Jesus in her womb, met Elizabeth, John’s mother, John leaped in the womb at his proximity to Jesus, the Son of God, because John knew Him.
Like much of Scripture, the words not written hold the most profound meaning. John, who before birth knew Christ, learned to see with the eyes of his body rather than those of his soul. If we want to see, know, and live with the Lord truly, we must move from trying to understand Him with our minds to living with and knowing Him again in our souls.
