Holy Bible, compass, and crucifix on a Europe map spread over a rustic wooden table

Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” —Matthew 5:13-16

For years, like other lukewarm Christians, I took up space in the pew most Sunday mornings, but that was all it did. I heard the Scriptures, but I did not listen. I lied to myself, that God was talking to someone else, in another time, but He was not speaking to me. Then, in a flash of black, a sudden impact, and I was sent to my just and righteous place. I was spit out of this world, into an eternity of misery, separated from God. But in His mercy, Jesus sent me back.

Christ speaks to each soul directly through Scripture. We must do more than hear with our ears; we must listen with our hearts. Pray with me the prayer I offer Christ every morning:

Lord God, send down your Holy Spirit upon me, and let your light shine through me. I offer myself to you this and every day. Do with me what you will. I cannot wait to see what you have planned for me. Amen
