“Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the river. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.” -Exodus 17:5-6

“Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink, ‘ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” -John 4:13-14

“After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I thirst.” -John 19:28

“but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.” -John 19:34

Jesus is the rock, whose thirst for souls is unquenchable, whose side is struck, letting flow the quenching water and blood of the New Temple. This is the same Blood and Water we drink in the Mass, giving the people eternal life.
