“The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them. When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” -Luke 2:16-21
Today we celebrate the Octave Day of Christmas, and Mary, the Holy Mother of God, the Theotokos (Greek for “God-bearer”). During Mass today, a vision I wrote about in Triumph of the Cross came to mind.
“…A few feet before us stood a woman in a white dress covered with a deep blue robe. I knew her to be the Blessed Mother, Mary. Her form was obscured of fine detail due to my excessive tears, and her body appeared to shimmer as if heat waves separated us. This effect may have been due to seeing her through my flowing tears, or it may have been due to how her form was presented to me. I could see her in solid form, yet somehow, I could still see the presence of our Lord in the Eucharist through her. She spoke to me and said, “This is what it is when one’s soul is exposed to Our Lord Jesus, the Christ. You cannot help but weep a veil of tears when in His presence…”
It occurred to me that I saw Jesus, through Mary, His mother, and I realized that in each of my interactions with Mary, she was always doing the work of her Son. Whether it was chaining demons or teaching lessons, she does it all as the servant mother of God. All her works are for and made possible by the Most Holy Trinity.
I pray that this coming year, the Holy Mother will lead you to see Christ through her. I pray you will follow her example, keeping in your heart and pondering all the amazing things the Lord will do for you this year. Merry Christmas, and a blessed New Year.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
