“There was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.” -Luke 2:36-40

Over the last couple of days, we’ve heard about the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. While there, Mary and Joseph listened to an ordinary man, Simeon, and an ordinary woman, Anna, give prophecy about the Christ child, Jesus.

While the man and woman spoke, they were merely active participants in the workings of the Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Spirit who placed those words in Simeon’s and Anna’s mouths.

Christ is present in the temple still, every day. Every day, the Holy Spirit places words in the mouths of ordinary men and women. All that is necessary for others to hear what God is saying is for ordinary men and women to listen to the voice of God and repeat what He places in our hearts.
