“Jesus said to the crowds: "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world.” -John 6:44-51
Jesus proclaims, “I AM the bread of life, then He takes it a step further and boldly states, “I AM the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread I give is my Flesh for the life of the world.”
How can we read the Bread of Life Discourse and come to any other conclusion that Jesus gave Himself for our salvation and presents Himself as Flesh and Blood to sustain us for all eternity? But there is more required than just believing in Him. Read carefully and understand what Jesus commands us to believe.
Christ says whoever believes has eternal life, then proceeds to teach what it is we must believe to obtain that blessed gift. He teaches that the bread and wine offered in the Mass is unlike any other food or drink. The inanimate bread and wine maintain their substance. At the same time, they are transformed into living bread by His full, living presence (Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity) so that when we eat His Bread and Drink His Blood, we obey His command, receive His Sacrifice, and gain eternal life.
Hallelujah, He is risen! He is risen indeed, Hallelujah!
