"I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world… Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” -John 6:47-51,53-56
God sent down manna, to feed His children in the desert, and it was intended to feed only their bodies. Then God sent down True Food and placed Him in a manger, a place where animals eat, and Jesus even uses the word for eating translated in Greek to mean “animals” eating. He tells us He is the true food and drink that will nourish both body and soul and give eternal life. At the Last Supper, Jesus shows us how we are to commemorate the covenant of His salvation, and there He laid out the foundation of the Mass. And, it is through the Mass that we receive Christ’s Flesh and Blood, living in the Holy Eucharist; the gift of eternal life living in us.
