“As they were coming down from the mountain, the disciples asked Jesus, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.” -Matthew 17:9-13
It must have been difficult for the prophets of old. They were given a message never heard before to proclaim to the world. How blessed are we to live in a time when we already know the story's outcome?
We know the Son of Man was born in Bethlehem to a virgin. The Word ministered to the world, suffered at the hands of man, was crucified, died, and rose from the dead. Jesus ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.
The story of Christ is documented and well-recorded, and we have Church teaching to back us up. Yet far too many still do not know the story of Salvation. We, the new prophets of the Lord, are given all we need to complete what God has tasked us. Go, my friends, tell it on the mountain; Jesus Christ is Lord!
Saint John of the Cross, pray for us.
