“The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall do what is right and just in the land In those days Judah shall be safe and Jerusalem shall dwell secure; this is what they shall call her: “The LORD our justice.” -Jeremiah 33:14-16
Today marks the first Sunday of Advent, and I’m inviting my friends to join me on a journey to Bethlehem as we await the coming of Our Lord Jesus. God is timeless, beyond and above all of time. He simultaneously sees the first moment, the last, and every point in between. This Advent, I invite you to ask God that you may accompany Mary, Joseph, and the still-not-born baby Jesus as they travel to Bethlehem.
Set aside ten minutes from each busy day of Advent to read the Scripture Readings for the day, and then ask God a special favor. Ask the Father to let you join Mary and Joseph as they travel to Bethlehem with the Son. Close your eyes and see what the Lord reveals in your mind. As you walk with them, talk with Mary and Joseph. As you become more comfortable on the walk, ask Mary’s permission to talk to her Baby, the King who lives inside her, and speak your heart to Christ in the womb.
I meditated on this journey last year during Advent and was greatly rewarded. I pray you will join me in the coming weeks and walk to Bethlehem with the Holy Family. Let Mary and Joseph guide you on your journey to meet the Christ Child.
Saint Edmund Campion, pray for us.
