“Jesus came into the district of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them. The Pharisees approached him and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and motherand be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” -Mark 10:1-12
Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden, where they lived and walked with God. He gave us marriage out of His love for His children so that while we must toil in this life, that burden may be eased by sharing this life with another. Two carry the load easier than one, but marriage is more than just two sharing the load.
The joining of man and woman in the sacrament of marriage foreshadows the union shared by the heavenly host and the Holy Trinity. In marriage, two beings join and become one yet maintain their unique physical characteristics. Our union with God will be different.
In the presence of the Holy Spirit, I became the bride of Our Lord. When I experienced the Prayer of Union, I poured into God, and He poured into me. We became one. I no longer lived as myself but lived in God. Unlike marriage on earth, I was not joined to Our Lord as one being; every atom, individually, was in union with God. Each cell cried out in the joy and ecstasy of God's glory. I wanted the Lord to allow me to remain in that union forever, but it was not my time, and He sent me back. Thus, when God joins us in marriage, only He may decide when and if it is time to break that union.
My friends, for those who suffer the effects of earthly divorce, the Church provides a solution, and relief from your sorrow, in the annulment process. Please disregard rumors or hearsay. Seek out a good priest and learn the facts yourself.
Father, may you grant peace and relief to all who suffer the grief of divorce. May you give them strength and send Your Spirit to lead them on their path. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
