“There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although they who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.” -John 2:1-11
Shameless plug: an excerpt from my second book, The Triumph of the Cross. “…Mary then spoke four words into my mind. “You’re walking too fast!”
Mary, who always cares for and intervenes with her Son on behalf of all her children, tried to slow me down, but I didn’t listen. I laughed as I thought about how her words reminded me of her words at the wedding at Cana. I’ve always loved the mother-Son exchange in that story. Mary knew the Lord best. From before His conception and through His life, ministry, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension, Mary had been there with Him.
At the wedding, Jesus asked Mary why He should be concerned that the groom and bride had run out of wine. Mary had already known since that day long ago when she and Joseph had found Jesus in the temple that Jesus would do whatever she asked of Him. I can almost see her gentle smile and loving wink toward her Son, never breaking her gaze upon Jesus as she tells the servers to listen to Him…” Servants, follow Mary’s command and listen to Him! Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
