“The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast. People came to Jesus and objected, "Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.” -Mark 2:18-20
The days of fasting are here. The enemy lies to us and says that now is the time to rejoice and celebrate and that the time for reward and justice is here. He tells us to fill our bellies and souls with the worldly feast.
But Jesus warns us of these days. He tells us the days will come when He is removed from this world, and then it will be the time to fast. In fasting, we sharpen the soul and dull the senses to the worldly feast.
To sustain us during our days of fasting, the Bridegoom returns each day in the Holy Mass. He invites us to a banquet to offer refreshment during our fast, to feast on the Bread of Life, and to experience a taste of the wedding feast that is to come in the next life.
Saint Sebastian, pray for us.
