Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three, a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” -Luke 12:49-53
Oh, how I wish the world were ablaze for Christ. But it wasn’t always that way for me. Like so many others in the pews, I was a box checker. I chose the priest who could celebrate Mass the quickest. Obligation met; now let’s get on to something more important.
I’m embarrassed to admit that’s who I was. I’ve changed, and my eyes have been opened. I know nothing is more important than the Mass, where Christ comes down to give His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity to feed His children. Now, I can clearly see the division Jesus speaks of in the world today.
We are divided into those who wish to see the world burning with the fire of Christ in their hearts and those who want to extinguish that flame so the world may plunge into darkness. The covers of my books show this division: heaven above, hell below, separated by that strip of Christ’s light where we live and where that battle rages for our souls.
