“Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Then Jesus told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.” -Luke 12:15-21
There was a time when my possessions owned me, and I coveted my own goods. I was the man building bigger barns to store my goods, but God said to me, ‘You fool, this night, your life is demanded of you.’
I had failed to build treasure in heaven, so God allowed me to feel the weight of my sin. He let me experience the terror of being separated from Him, and He let me witness the despair of hell. But He had mercy on me. He let me live, bathed in His glorious light, and He let me return to warn my brothers and sisters.
Before, I never focused on building treasure in heaven, but now I do. I do not store my heavenly treasures but rather give them away to all who hear or read my words. Any good I do comes not from me but from God, so the treasure belongs to Him. At the end of my life, I will approach my Lord with nothing but faith in His Divine Mercy. I will tell Him, ‘You are all I have, all I want, and all I need.’
