“After Jesus had spoken, a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home. He entered and reclined at table to eat. The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal. The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil. You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside? But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”-Luke 11:37-41
When the Holy Spirit touched me, I felt myself empty into Him. Saint Teresa of Avila named this type of encounter with God the Prayer of Union. All that was inside me poured out into Him. Every drop emptied from me was replaced with Our Lord as He poured into me.
God made all of me, yet I allowed sin to fill the interior, leaving my soul unclean, affected by plunder and evil. Then God cleansed me. He poured out the filth, displacing it with Himself.
Sacrifice, alms, and fasting are gifts the Lord uses to remind us: We need nothing of this world if only we have Him dwelling within us.
Saint Teresa of Avila, pray for us.
