“Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” -Matthew 5:13-16
This passage reminds me of the age-old philosophical question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” As Christians, we are given the gift of knowing the Gospel. Through the Word, we become like salt and light. Light for the sake of light and salt for the sake of salt are useless to themselves. Their value is found by those who use them.
I want to pose a spiritual twist to that philosophical question. If one is filled with the salt and light of Our Lord, Jesus, but does not make a sound to tell others, is he indeed a Christian?
Be salty and bright, my friends, and let others experience what Christ has given you.
