“Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen…The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted." -Matthew 23:1-5,11-12
Christ asks more from us than only to observe God’s Law; He asks us to live it. God desires us to practice the Law in our lives, not because He wants us burdened, but because the Law is the road that leads back to Him. It is the foundation beneath our feet as we walk with Jesus.
The enemy strives to lead us off that road and away from Christ. Our adversary uses our pride to initiate a fall, just as pride caused his own. But God knows humility repels the enemy, thus the reason Jesus desires it from us,
