“Jesus said to his disciples: “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?”-Luke 8:22-25
This world covers us like a heavy blanket in the summer, yet it is all we know. We wear it, unaware of the misery it causes. If only we were to toss that blanket aside, we would finally know true comfort. Only when we lose the trappings of this world will we see our cross as the gift it is. We need to change our perspective.
We want the Lord to come to meet us where we are when, in reality, we must go to meet Him where He is. By throwing off the temporary things of this world, we are free to pick up our cross with joy. In carrying our cross, we learn it is where the Father’s will and our profit abides. Finally, we question, what good is it to possess anything of this world if we do not have God?
But first, before any of that, we must have the faith to trust the Lord and throw away the world’s smothering blanket. Saint Claude de la Colombiere, pray for us.
