"Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick –no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them." So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them."-Mark 6:7-13
The Apostles learned to depend on the providence and grace of God to provide for their needs on their mission. They took no material goods, but they took something along with them, which is not mentioned in this passage. The Apostles took along with them a thorough knowledge of Scripture and a deep reverence for the Lord.
Christ also sent me on a journey (He sends us all). However, while I had reverence for God, I lacked knowledge of Scripture. I learned quickly that the mission could not be completed without a deeper understanding of the Gospel. So, while I still depend on the Lord to provide for my journey, I’ve cast my walking stick aside. Now, I lean heavily on the Scriptures and the Catechism to be sure I do not stumble.
The Lord is calling you; if you haven’t left already, you will go on your own Journey. Lent is rapidly approaching. Maybe it is time for us all to do a little reading and prepare for the trip.
