“Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, "John has been raised from the dead"; others were saying, "Elijah has appeared"; still others, "One of the ancient prophets has arisen." But Herod said, "John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?" And he kept trying to see him." -Luke 9:7-9 How often are we like Herod? Curious about Jesus, and wanting to know more about Him, but missing opportunity after opportunity to personally encounter Christ. Sometimes it’s difficult to see Jesus, not because He isn’t there, but because we are afraid once we see Him we will force ourselves to change. The lie of the enemy is that our sin gives us pleasure, but the truth is that within sin there is only pain. I had to go to a place of eternal regret and misery to learn that lesson. Close to God, there is true pleasure and separated from Him, only pain.
