“Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct." -Matthew 16:24-28
Christ speaks of forfeiting this mortal life on Earth to gain our immortal life after this one. A moment in Hell or a second in the presence of God, are both an eternity, only the former you’ll wish will end and the latter you will pray never will. Once we pass from this world to the next, the opportunity to deny ourselves and pick up our cross is gone. Life without God is not life, it is death. If we find ourselves bathed in Christ's light, love, mercy, and power, we will realize that our life in this world wasn’t life either. Our true life begins when we are welcomed into the Father’s Kingdom. My friends, that is why carrying our cross with love and joy for Christ is so important.
