“Raphael called the two of them aside privately and said to them: “Bless God and give him thanks before all the living for the good things he has done for you, by blessing and extolling his name in song. Proclaim before all with due honor the deeds of God, and do not be slack in thanking him.” -Tobit 12:6
“He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." -Mark 12:41-44
We live in a country of two extremes, one of great physical wealth, and the other of even greater spiritual poverty. It is greater because while physical poverty is an affliction of the poor, Spiritual poverty afflicts both the rich and poor alike. As Christians, we know to give to God from our physical wealth but often withhold giving from our spiritual bank. Those who suffer spiritual poverty desperately need to receive spiritual alms from us. We give alms to the spiritual poor when we proclaim to them all that God has done for us, and show them that God showers us all with great blessings. We give them a spiritual hand up, so they too one day may give to God from their own Spiritual bank and proclaim to others all that God has done for them as well.
